At least three children were shot in separate gun accidents today. Two were wounded. One was killed.
In Senatobia, Mississippi, a two-year old girl found a loaded gun and shot herself. She is being treated at a local hospital and is in stable condition. The incident is being reported as an “accidental discharge.” It is unclear how the child got hold of a gun or was able to pull the trigger.
In Edgewood, Maryland, a 15-year old boy and his 14-year old friend found a gun in a closet. While the 14-year old was handling the gun, it accidentally fired, striking the older boy. The 14-year-old was charged as a juvenile with reckless endangerment and was released to a guardian. The 15-year old suffered non-life threatening injuries.
In Manhattan, New York, Jaquan Coppedge, a teenager, was fatally shot as he and his friends played around with a gun inside an apartment. One of the victim’s friends then grabbed the gun and threw it down the building’s garbage chute. The friend told police, “Coppedge had pulled the gun from his waistband and shot himself in the forehead by accident.”
