Michelle Ansley, a 40-year old Thomson, Georgia woman was accidentally shot by a family member who was cleaning his gun. Ansley was shot in the leg and was taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Police are investigating, but gun cleaning accidents are common, especially with certain guns that lack basic safety features like loaded chamber indicators, magazine safety disconnects, or external manual safeties. Cleaning accidents also occur frequently with Glocks and certain other guns for which disassembly requires a trigger pull.
UPDATE: On September 1, 2020, John Ansley, 41, gave himself up to officers on charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct.
