In an incident that should trigger an investigation of police conduct, a Culver City, California police officer was accidentally shot by another officer while they were chasing a homeless man who allegedly was wielding a knife.  In the incident, the homeless man was shot and killed.

According to a report, the shooting occurred in mid-afternoon on the roof of a parking complex. “Officers were chasing the man, who may have been homeless and allegedly had a knife, then shot him after initially deploying less-lethal munitions…”  The officer was struck in the leg by “friendly fire.”  He is in fair condition.

It is unclear why gunshots were fired at all in the incident.  The dead man has not yet been identified.
