In LaGrange, Georgia, 22-year old Haley Newsom was shot in the head and killed in an apparent gun accident on Sunday. According to a statement issued by the Troup County Sheriff’s Office:
“After speaking with witnesses in the home, investigators have determined that the following occurred. A 17-year-old white male identified as Cameryn Phillips was waving a handgun around in the living room of the residence when the gun discharged — striking Newsom in the head causing her to immediately fall to the ground. At that point Phillips ran over to Newsom, picked her up and carried her outside as he was going to attempt to take her to the hospital for medical care, which is where deputies made contact with them.”
Sheriff’s deputies administered life saving measures until she could be taken to a local hospital. Haley was then airlifted to Atlanta hospital where she later died.
There is an ongoing investigation, but no charges have yet been filed.
