A child is dead after a gun accident in Fairview, North Carolina. Although sources indicate that the wound was self inflicted and that the victim was five-years old, authorities expressly declined to release any details of the incident on the basis that the victim was under 18.  An investigation is ongoing.

This case illustrates the difficulties of gathering details of gun accidents sufficient to make informed public policy decisions.
