Ashley James, a 19-year old who recently starred on the Green Run High School basketball team in Chesapeake, Virginia, was shot and killed today in an accidental shooting. He and another teen were handling a gun when it went off. James received emergency care, but died from his wound. No further information about the nature of the accident was reported. According to police, no criminal charges will be filed.
The night of the accident, James had been in attendance as his former high school team won a double-overtime game to become the Region 5A Champions. During his high school career, James, a 6-foot-3 guard, was named “the Class 5 Region A Player of the Year, the Beach District Player of the Year and a two-time first-team all-state selection. He is best remembered for hitting the game-winning half-court shot … that sent the Stallions to the state tournament.”
He had recently committed to play at Missouri State next year. According to a report, “[n]ow, he’s being remembered as a wonderful person with an infectious smile and determined attitude.”
