A Daytona Beach, Florida woman, Lauren Sherriffs, was arrested and charged with child abuse after a minor in her care shot himself in the foot with a .40-caliber handgun. The boy found the gun in a closet and was attempting to unload the gun went it off.
Initially, the boy told police that he was taking out the trash and was shot after being confronted by three men. He later admitted he made this story up because he “didn’t want to look stupid.”
The woman admitted that she had failed to secure the gun. Although Florida does not have a gun lock law, Ms. Sherriffs was initially charged with culpable negligence. The charge was later changed to aggravated child abuse. Ms. Sherriffs is being held without bail.
